Board, Captains Nominations and Theme Ideas

Thanks for your nominations, it's time to vote on your T.U. 2011-2012 Board Candidates as well as the theme for the upcoming Fall league. The ballot will close at midnight on Thursday, September 15.

Chair Candidates

Libby O'Neill: "I started playing pickup ultimate with some friends in college, and eventually played Gainesville league. When I moved to Tallahassee, I played pickup a few times, but really started playing more when we got the league started. I've been volunteering for the league since the first year, and it has been awesome to watch it grow. I would like to see more new players coming out and learning the love of the game. Being on the league board has definitely been a learning experience for me, and I feel like we have improved a lot in just a few short years in organization and leadership. I would love the opportunity to be league chair for another year."

Co-Chair Candidates

Josh Boyd: "The fat cats of the Tallahassee Ultimate League have had their chance. It's time to change the way those slackers do business. To be fair, most of them did a fantastic job, but there was that one guy. That Captain's Liaison? All he did was liaise around with the captains all season. I heard he once liaised two captains at once. That's in addition to all the liaising he was doing on the side with the whole Boomstick roster, which he was supposed to be captaining. Scandalous. I say a good first step towards making a change would be to elect that guy to the board. I mean, who would see that coming? Nothing says change like taking an appointed board member and making him an elected board member. Sure I could tell you that Josh hopes to continue the growth of the Tallahassee Ultimate League by strengthening our relationship with the community. I could even tell you about how he also hopes to continue refining the league format to maximize fairness, high spirit, and fun. But what really matters is that Josh Boyd is pro slip n' slides and water balloons, and he's all for candy prizes. Whichever way the Chair election goes, Josh Boyd is up for being either the Robin to Libby's Batman, or the Aqualad to Jasun's Aquaman. Vote Josh Boyd for Co-Chair or he may creep up and liaise you in your sleep."

Paul Guyas: "2011-12 is/will be my 11th and 12th year of ultimate. I began playing in a Cleveland city league and then was recruited into the Cleveland club team where I captained the B team and then went to regionals with the A team. In 2006, I enrolled in grad school and began playing college ultimate for 2 years in Ohio (coach/captaining) and then 2008-2009 in Tallahassee with DUF. I played mixed club summer 2009 and qualified for regionals and last year I played in the masters division on Early Bird Special a team that lost "the game to go" at Regionals in Austin. This year I will be playing the fall series with Slow Country Boil a nationals team in 2010.

I have played in city leagues for 11 years and have captained about half of that time. I have been a UPA certified coach for four years and a UPA certified observer for six. I am the current coach of DUF Lite, Florida State’s B team. Professionally, I am a Certified Strength/Conditioning Coach and a Health and Fitness Instructor (Personal Trainer). This will be my sixth TU league season. I missed 2010 summer league due to a foot surgery.

Spirt of the Game is something very important to me and I continue to think about what it means. To me it means that we all work together to strive for excellence on the field and a well-played game is the overall goal. It also means that we assume a baseline respect for all players, their backgrounds and opinions and also that we respect the game and play it the way it was intended understanding that no single contest is ever worth compromising the greater good of the sport. I sum it up by saying that we measure success by our team playing our best and competing against the opponent’s best.

My visions and goals for the league in 2011-12:
1-Player Development / opportunities to learn and improve. Put into practice recurring league-focused practices/clinics.
2-Captain Accountability with measurable objectives for the captains and tools to measure those objectives*.
*captain's responsibilities may include:
mandatory intra-team weekly participation-based discussion of a unique aspect/play/situation on Spirit of the Game
paper tool for score keeping and reporting (including team spirit score, individual MVP/MSP vote) with immediate turn-in by captains
involving/allowing/ensuring full roster participation/instruction
3-Overall improvement of on-field product - better game flow/time management, more competitive/higher skill, better parity of team rosters.
4-Initiate discussion/proposal for instructional observer program and implement if deemed valuable.
5- improved communication from league board regarding policy/rules/set-up"

Secretary Candidates

Wendy Chan: "I started playing casual pickup in the summer of 2003 only because I met this boy that I ended up marrying. =) Turns out I fell in love with the sport as much as I did with the boy and I've been playing ever since. I've played in leagues in Orlando, Gainesville, and now Tallahassee. I've also played in loads of women's and co-ed club tournaments. When we moved here from Gainesville, there was no league in existence so a small group of us decided that had to change. We started up the first season in October of 2008 and have been growing ever since. It's been a pleasure to see the league continue to be successful season after season and year after year. I look forward to being able to do what I can to keep it going and improving."

Treasurer Candidates

Jasun Burdick: "I have been playing ultimate for 10 years playing in Orlando, Gainesville and now here in Tally. When we moved here 3 years ago the only organized ultimate was DUF and some inconsistent pickup games. So Windy, Libby, I, and a few others put a website together, booked some fields, and got it all started. Now after 3 years league is still growing and we are still improving.
My mission is to focus on the youth (<19) and get ultimate to be played at all the High and middle schools. With coaches at each school and tournaments each semester. So that in the future Tallahassee will be # 1 in the state. Winning both the best spirit, having the most fun, and dominating on the scoreboard."
