Honoring Christian Nimis...
Words taken from an article in the Democrat written
by Cara Boruch-Dolan last year:
When Christian Nimis wasn't in school or working, you could always
find him playing Ultimate Frisbee. Nimis developed a love of Ultimate
while a student at SAIL High School, a passion he carried into college.
He started Tallahassee's first traveling team.
After his death at age 22 in 2008, his peers created this event to
celebrate this social sport while honoring Nimis.
Nimis is remembered almost in awe, earning such descriptions as: local
legend, an inspiration and brotherly figure.
He forced fellow SAIL students to maintain their grades to be eligible
to play, and helped the less fortunate travel to out of state games
and get the proper shoes.
"Christian was very modest but I think he would be very proud
and honored by this event," said his mother, Marion Nimis.
The Nimis Fund was established
in honor or Christian Nimis, who was instrumental in organizing ultimate
at SAIL High School when he was a student. Proceeds from this, or
any other events organized for this cause, will go to supporting youth
ultimate in Tallahassee. This may be in the form of equipment, local
leagues, clinics, and tournaments focused on youth. Ultimate is a
fast-growing sport, and engaging youth is vital to its further development.
The Fund is administrated by Tallahassee Ultimate, Inc. |
